How to Manage Frost Buildup in Your LG Freezer

Is Some Frost Normal?

A thin layer of frost (1/4 inch or less) on the walls and items in a manual-defrost chest freezer is normal and expected. Frost-free upright freezers should have no visible frost buildup — if you see it, the defrost system has a problem.

• Warm, humid air entering — every time the lid or door is opened, warm air replaces cold air and its moisture freezes on the coldest surfaces
• Damaged door gasket — a leaking seal allows a continuous flow of warm, humid air, accelerating frost buildup dramatically
• Defrost system failure (frost-free models) — the heater, thermostat, or timer that periodically melts frost has failed

Manual Defrost: When and How

Manual-defrost chest freezers should be defrosted when frost reaches 1/2 inch or is impacting capacity:

1. Turn off or unplug the freezer.
2. Remove all food to a cooler or second refrigerator.
3. Open the lid and allow frost to melt. Place towels around the base.
4. Do NOT use sharp tools to chip at frost — you can puncture the refrigerant coils behind the liner.
5. Wipe dry, plug in, and allow to reach temperature before returning food.

Diagnosing Defrost System Failure (Frost-Free Models)

In a frost-free LG upright freezer, if frost appears on the evaporator coils (accessible by removing the rear interior panel), one of three components has failed:

• Defrost heater — test for continuity (should NOT be infinite)
• Defrost thermostat — a bimetal thermostat that opens the heater circuit when coils reach a safe temperature; test for continuity when cold
• Defrost timer or control board — initiates the defrost cycle at regular intervals

A technician can diagnose which component has failed and replace it. This is significantly less expensive than compressor work and restores full cooling capacity.
