Ice Maker Guide

Why Is My LG Ice Maker Making Small or Hollow Ice?

3 min read Updated: April 7, 2026 By LG Appliance Experts

Small, hollow, or misshapen ice from your LG ice maker signals a water supply or temperature issue. Here is how to diagnose and fix each cause.

Why Ice Size and Quality Matter

Properly formed ice from an LG ice maker should be clear, fully formed cubes (or crescents, depending on the mold design). Small, hollow, cloudy, or oddly shaped ice indicates that the ice-making process was incomplete — usually due to insufficient water fill, temperature issues, or water quality.

Low Water Pressure

Ice makers require a minimum of 20 PSI water pressure to fill the ice mold completely. Low pressure results in molds that only partially fill, producing small or hollow ice. Check your home’s water pressure and verify the supply line shutoff valve is fully open.

Partially Clogged Water Filter

A filter that is past its replacement date restricts water flow enough to reduce fill volume in the ice mold. Replace the filter (every 6 months) and observe if ice size improves. Run 2–3 harvest cycles before judging — the system needs to cycle through the new filter.

Ice Maker Valve or Fill Tube Issue

The water inlet valve supplies water to the ice maker mold. If the valve is partially clogged with sediment or the solenoid is weak, it may not open long enough to fill the mold completely. The fill tube (the small plastic tube that directs water into the mold) can also become partially blocked with mineral scale.

Temperature Issues

If the freezer is slightly too warm (above 5°F), ice may form but not solidly — resulting in soft, misshapen ice that looks complete but is actually hollow in the center. Check the freezer temperature and ensure the condenser coils are clean.

Cloudy vs. Clear Ice

Completely clear ice forms when air and minerals are pushed to the center as water freezes from the outside in (directional freezing). Most home ice makers trap air and minerals, resulting in cloudy ice. This is normal and does not affect safety or taste. Extremely hard water produces white, chalky ice — a water filtration system can improve this.

When to Call a Technician

If ice is consistently small after replacing the filter and verifying water pressure, the inlet valve or ice maker module likely needs replacement. A technician can test the valve solenoid and measure the actual water fill volume to pinpoint the issue in one visit.

Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice

While many Ice Maker issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.

LG Appliance Experts technicians are trained directly to LG's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.

Preventing the Problem from Recurring

Most Ice Maker issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:

  • Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
  • Don't overload. Consistently running your Ice Maker beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
  • Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
  • Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
  • Level the appliance. An unlevel Ice Maker vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.

LG Warranty and Service Coverage

LG offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components — most notably the 10-year warranty on linear compressors in qualifying refrigerators. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact LG directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.

For appliances outside the warranty period, LG Appliance Experts provides a 90-day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine LG OEM components sourced directly from LG's authorized parts network.
