LG Microwave Not Heating: Is It the Magnetron or Something Simpler?

3 min read Updated: April 7, 2026 By LG Appliance Experts

A microwave that runs but doesn’t heat food is alarming but often fixable. Before assuming the magnetron is bad, check these simpler components first — they fail more often.

Important Safety Warning First

Microwave ovens contain a high-voltage capacitor that can hold a lethal charge for hours or days after being unplugged. Do not open a microwave’s interior panels unless you are trained to discharge the capacitor safely. The information below is for understanding the diagnosis — component replacement should be performed by a certified technician.

How Microwaves Heat Food

The microwave generates a high-frequency electromagnetic wave using the magnetron, powered by a high-voltage transformer and capacitor. If any component in this chain fails, the microwave runs (the turntable spins, the light works, the fan runs) but produces no heat.

Simpler Components That Fail More Often Than the Magnetron

1. Door Interlock Switches

LG microwaves have 2–3 door interlock switches that must all close when the door shuts. A faulty switch can prevent the magnetron from energizing while all other functions work normally. These are inexpensive but require disassembly to access and replace.

2. High-Voltage Diode

The diode converts AC to DC for the magnetron. It is a common failure part. A failed diode often produces a loud buzzing sound during operation. A technician can test it with a multimeter in diode mode.

3. High-Voltage Capacitor

The capacitor stores and amplifies voltage for the magnetron circuit. A failed capacitor often presents with a loud humming sound and no heat. This is the most dangerous component to work with — the lethal stored charge must be discharged before any testing.

4. Thermal Cutout or Thermoprotector

A safety fuse that opens if the magnetron overheats. If it blows, the microwave runs normally but produces no heat. Often located directly on the magnetron. These are inexpensive but the root cause (blocked ventilation) must be addressed.

When the Magnetron Actually Is the Problem

Magnetron failure presents as a microwave that runs without heating but all the above components test normal. A magnetron replacement costs $80–200 for the part alone. On a microwave that is more than 7–8 years old, replacement of the appliance may be more cost-effective than magnetron replacement.

LG Extended Warranty on Magnetron

LG covers the magnetron for 10 years on most over-the-range and countertop microwave models. Check your documentation or contact LG with your model and serial number before paying for a replacement.

Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice

While many Microwave issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.

LG Appliance Experts technicians are trained directly to LG's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.

Preventing the Problem from Recurring

Most Microwave issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:

  • Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
  • Don't overload. Consistently running your Microwave beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
  • Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
  • Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
  • Level the appliance. An unlevel Microwave vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.

LG Warranty and Service Coverage

LG offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components — most notably the 10-year warranty on linear compressors in qualifying refrigerators. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact LG directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.

For appliances outside the warranty period, LG Appliance Experts provides a 30-day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine LG OEM components sourced directly from LG's authorized parts network.
