A faulty component in the condenser fan motor can short circuit, causing the condenser fan motor to overheat and posing a potential fire hazard to consumers.
A capacitor inside the condenser fan motor assembly on these LG and Kenmore Elite Trio bottom-freezer refrigerators could arc and short circuit, generating smoke and posing a fire risk. LG logged 82 incidents — some involving smoke damage to the refrigerator or surrounding cabinetry — before issuing this recall of approximately 20,000 units in June 2005.
All affected consumers were offered a free in-home repair by LG or Sears-dispatched technicians. The recall covers three-door bottom-freezer refrigerators with capacities between 21 and 25 cubic feet, sold in titanium, stainless, bisque, white, and black finishes.
