LG Self-Cleaning Oven: How to Use It Safely

How Self-Clean Works

LG ovens offer two self-cleaning methods depending on the model:

• High-heat self-clean — heats the oven to approximately 880°F for 2–5 hours, turning food residue to ash that you wipe out when cool
• EasyClean — a shorter, lower-temperature steam clean for light soil (uses water you add to the oven floor)

Before You Start

1. Remove all racks. The extreme heat can discolor and warp oven racks. Clean them separately in the sink or bathtub.
2. Remove large food debris. Use a scraper to remove loose chunks. Excessive grease can ignite and produce excessive smoke during the cycle.
3. Open a window. Self-cleaning produces significant smoke and odors. Run your kitchen exhaust fan on high.
4. Keep pets out of the kitchen. The fumes from a self-clean cycle are harmful to birds and can affect other pets.

Running the Cycle

1. Select Self Clean from the oven menu.
2. Choose a cycle duration — 2 hours for light soil, 3–4 hours for heavy soil.
3. Press Start. The door will lock automatically.
4. Do not attempt to open the door during the cycle — the lock will not release until the oven cools below approximately 550°F.
5. After the cycle ends, wait 2–3 hours for the oven to cool and the lock to release.
6. Wipe out the white ash with a damp cloth.

Common Problems During Self-Clean

• F9 or door lock error — the door lock motor or latch has an issue. Do not force the door. Power cycle the oven and try again.
• Oven shuts off mid-cycle — the thermal fuse has tripped from excessive heat, often caused by heavy grease buildup. Allow to cool and check for grease on the oven floor before running again.
• Excessive smoke — normal with heavy soil, but a significant grease fire inside the oven requires turning off the oven and waiting — never open the door if there are flames inside.

How Often to Self-Clean

Running a self-clean cycle too frequently stresses components. LG recommends using it only when needed — typically 2–4 times per year for average use. Use the EasyClean feature for routine light maintenance cleaning between cycles.

• Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
• Don't overload. Consistently running your Oven & Range beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
• Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
• Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
• Level the appliance. An unlevel Oven & Range vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.

LG Warranty and Service Coverage

LG offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components — most notably the 10-year warranty on linear compressors in qualifying refrigerators.
