LG Refrigerator Not Cooling: Diagnosis and Repair Guide

3 min read Updated: April 7, 2026 By LG Appliance Experts

A warm LG refrigerator can mean anything from a blocked air vent to a failed compressor. This guide walks you through the diagnosis in order of likelihood and cost.

First: Is the Freezer Cold?

The answer to this question splits the diagnosis into two completely different paths. LG refrigerators cool the freezer first, then circulate that cold air into the refrigerator section through a damper-controlled duct.

  • Freezer cold, refrigerator warm → airflow or damper problem
  • Both sections warm → compressor, refrigerant, or sealed system problem

Freezer Cold, Fridge Warm — Airflow Diagnosis

Evaporator Coil Ice Buildup

The most common cause of a warm fridge with a cold freezer is a frozen evaporator coil in the freezer compartment. When the defrost system fails, ice accumulates on the coils until airflow is completely blocked.

  1. Remove all food from the freezer.
  2. Remove the rear interior panel of the freezer (usually 4–6 screws).
  3. If you see a solid block of ice on the coils, the defrost system has failed.

You can temporarily restore cooling by manually defrosting (leave the freezer door open for 24 hours with towels on the floor), but the defrost heater, thermostat, or control board must be repaired to prevent recurrence.

Damper Control

The damper (air diffuser) is a motorized or bimetal flap between the freezer and refrigerator that controls airflow. If it sticks closed, the refrigerator gets no cold air. Test by setting the refrigerator to its coldest setting — you should hear a rush of cold air from the top rear vent. If not, the damper may be stuck.

Both Sections Warm — Sealed System Diagnosis

Linear Compressor

LG refrigerators from 2009–2018 used a linear compressor that was subject to a class action lawsuit for premature failure. If your LG refrigerator is from this era and both sections are warm, the compressor may have failed. LG extended warranties to 5 years on the sealed system for affected models — check your model number at LG’s website.

Refrigerant Leak

If the compressor runs (you can hear or feel it) but the fridge is warm, refrigerant may have leaked. This requires EPA certification to diagnose and repair — do not attempt this yourself.

When to Call for Service

Any diagnosis beyond checking airflow vents requires accessing the evaporator coils, refrigerant lines, or compressor. Schedule service immediately if both sections are warm — food safety is at risk, and refrigerant leaks are environmental hazards.

Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice

While many Refrigerator issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.

LG Appliance Experts technicians are trained directly to LG's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.

Preventing the Problem from Recurring

Most Refrigerator issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:

  • Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
  • Don't overload. Consistently running your Refrigerator beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
  • Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
  • Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
  • Level the appliance. An unlevel Refrigerator vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.

LG Warranty and Service Coverage

LG offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components — most notably the 10-year warranty on linear compressors in qualifying refrigerators. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact LG directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.

For appliances outside the warranty period, LG Appliance Experts provides a 90-day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine LG OEM components sourced directly from LG's authorized parts network.
