1. Child Lock Is Activated
The most overlooked cause. LG refrigerators have a child lock or control lock that disables the dispenser. Check the display for a lock icon and consult your manual for the button combination to disable it (usually holding Lock or a designated button for 3 seconds).
2. Water Filter Is Clogged or Not Installed Correctly
LG recommends replacing the water filter every 6 months. A heavily clogged filter restricts flow to near zero. Also verify the filter is fully seated — a partially installed filter breaks the water path. Bypass caps are available if you want to test without a filter.
3. Frozen Water Supply Tube
The water supply tube that runs through the freezer door can freeze if the freezer is set too cold or if there is a door seal issue. This is common in French door models. The frozen section is usually where the tube enters the door at the bottom hinge. A hair dryer on low heat applied to the door hinge area (with the door closed) can thaw it in 20–30 minutes.
4. Failed Water Inlet Valve
The inlet valve has separate solenoids for the ice maker and dispenser. If the dispenser solenoid fails but the ice maker still works, the valve needs replacement. You can test the solenoid with a multimeter — it should show approximately 200–500 ohms resistance.
5. Dispenser Switch or Control Board
Pressing the dispenser paddle activates a micro-switch that tells the control board to open the water valve. If the switch fails or the control board has a fault in that circuit, pressing the paddle does nothing. This is less common but does occur, particularly in older units.
Water Pressure Requirements
LG water dispensers require a minimum of 20 PSI household water pressure to operate. If your water pressure is marginal, the dispenser may dispense slowly or intermittently. A plumber can measure your home’s water pressure with a simple gauge.
