How to Fix OE Error on LG Front Load Washer

3 min read Updated: April 5, 2026 By LG Appliance Experts

The OE error code means your LG washer cannot drain. This guide walks you through every likely cause and fix — from a clogged pump filter to a kinked drain hose.

What Does the OE Error Code Mean?

The OE error on an LG front-load washer stands for “Outlet Error” — the machine cannot drain water within the time allowed (usually 5 minutes). It will appear mid-cycle or at the end of a wash when the drain pump fails to clear the drum.

Most Common Causes

  • Clogged pump filter — the most frequent culprit, especially in households with pets or lint-heavy fabrics
  • Kinked or improperly routed drain hose — the hose should not exceed 96 inches or be inserted more than 6 inches into the standpipe
  • Blocked standpipe or house drain — if your sink drains slowly, the same pipe your washer uses may be partially blocked
  • Failed drain pump motor — you may hear a humming noise with no water movement
  • Control board fault — rare, but possible if the pump tests fine electrically

Step 1 — Clean the Pump Filter

  1. Unplug the washer.
  2. Locate the small access panel on the front lower-left corner of the machine.
  3. Place a shallow pan under the panel — about a quart of water will drain out.
  4. Slowly unscrew the filter cap counterclockwise. Let the water drain before fully removing.
  5. Pull out the filter and remove all lint, coins, and debris.
  6. Rinse the filter under running water and inspect the pump cavity for any obstructions.
  7. Reinstall the filter, tighten firmly, and close the access panel.

Step 2 — Check the Drain Hose

Follow the drain hose from the back of the washer to where it connects to the standpipe or utility sink. Verify:

  • No sharp kinks or bends in the hose
  • The hose is not inserted more than 6 inches into the standpipe (creates a siphon)
  • The hose end is no higher than 96 inches from the floor

Step 3 — Test the Drain Pump

Put the washer into its diagnostic mode by pressing and holding SPIN SPEED + SOIL LEVEL for 3 seconds (varies by model — check your owner’s manual). Navigate to the drain pump test and listen for a steady hum with water movement. A hum with no drainage indicates a seized impeller; silence indicates an electrical failure.

Step 4 — Call a Technician

If the filter is clean, the hose is clear, and the pump fails its test, you need a pump replacement. This is a 45-minute repair for a certified technician and should not be deferred — running a washer with a failing pump can damage the motor controller.

Preventive Maintenance Tips

  • Clean the pump filter every 3 months or after washing pet bedding
  • Always check pockets for coins, hairpins, and tissues before loading
  • Run a monthly Tub Clean cycle to prevent residue buildup in the pump
