LG Washer LE Error: Motor Locked — What To Do

3 min read Updated: April 8, 2026 By LG Appliance Experts

The LE error means your LG washer’s Direct Drive motor has locked or overloaded. Most LE errors are caused by overloading or a seized motor — here’s how to tell the difference and fix it.

What Is the LE Error?

LE stands for Locked motor Error. LG’s Direct Drive motor communicates directly with the control board, and if the motor detects resistance it cannot overcome, it stops and displays LE to prevent overheating and damage.

Step 1 — Reset and Reduce the Load

  1. Unplug the washer for 10 minutes.
  2. Remove roughly one-third of the laundry from the drum.
  3. Plug back in and restart the cycle.

If LE does not return, the load was simply too heavy. LG front-loaders are rated by dry weight — a 4.5 cu. ft. machine handles about 15–18 lbs of dry laundry, which expands considerably when wet.

Step 2 — Check for a Foreign Object

A sock, underwire, or coin lodged between the drum and the tub can jam the drum and cause LE. Spin the drum by hand (with the machine unplugged) to feel for resistance or a scraping sensation.

Step 3 — Check the Stator and Hall Sensor

LG Direct Drive motors have a stator (stationary windings) and a rotor (magnet ring). The hall sensor reads rotor position. If the hall sensor fails, the motor does not know how to commutate and locks up. This requires removing the back panel and testing the hall sensor with a multimeter.

Step 4 — Motor or Control Board Replacement

If the stator windings have failed (usually burnt insulation visible on resistance testing), the motor requires replacement. In rare cases, the main control board incorrectly reports LE when the motor is electrically fine. A certified technician can distinguish between these faults with the LG diagnostic routine.

LG’s 10-Year Motor Warranty

LG covers the Direct Drive motor for 10 years on most models. If your washer is within that window, contact LG directly or schedule service through an authorized service provider to claim this warranty before paying out of pocket.

Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice

While many Washer issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.

LG Appliance Experts technicians are trained directly to LG's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.

Preventing the Problem from Recurring

Most Washer issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:

  • Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
  • Don't overload. Consistently running your Washer beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
  • Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
  • Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
  • Level the appliance. An unlevel Washer vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.

LG Warranty and Service Coverage

LG offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components — most notably the 10-year warranty on linear compressors in qualifying refrigerators. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact LG directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.

For appliances outside the warranty period, LG Appliance Experts provides a 90-day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine LG OEM components sourced directly from LG's authorized parts network.
