How to Reduce LG Dryer Drying Time

3 min read Updated: April 7, 2026 By LG Appliance Experts

If your LG dryer takes two cycles to dry a load, the problem is almost always airflow — not the dryer itself. Here’s a complete checklist to restore full drying performance.

Why Drying Takes Longer Over Time

A brand-new LG dryer can dry a full load in 45–60 minutes. If yours is taking 90 minutes or two cycles, the dryer is not broken — it is restricted. Airflow is everything in a dryer: hot, moist air must exit the duct efficiently for clothes to dry.

The Airflow Checklist

  1. Clean the lint filter before every load — a partially clogged filter forces the dryer to work harder and extend cycle time.
  2. Clean the exhaust duct once a year — or more often if you have pets or dry heavy fabrics frequently.
  3. Check the exterior vent cap — the flap should open easily when the dryer runs. A stuck or damaged cap traps moist air inside.
  4. Verify duct material — replace any vinyl or plastic flexible duct with rigid or semi-rigid aluminum. Plastic collapses over time, severely restricting flow.
  5. Check duct length and bends — for electric dryers, maximum equivalent duct length is 65 feet. Every 90° bend adds 5 equivalent feet.

Load Size and Fabric Sorting

  • Dry similar fabrics together — heavy towels and lightweight t-shirts have very different drying times. Mixing them means either the shirts are over-dried or the towels are still damp.
  • Do not overload — clothes need room to tumble. The drum should be no more than 75% full.
  • Spin speed matters — the faster your washer spins, the less water enters the dryer. Use the maximum spin speed for items that tolerate it.

Sensor Dry vs. Timed Dry

LG’s Sensor Dry uses moisture-sensing strips inside the drum to end the cycle when clothes are dry — it is more efficient than timed dry for most loads. However, if the sensing strips are coated with fabric softener, they read “dry” before clothes actually are. Clean the strips (two metal bars inside the drum) with rubbing alcohol every few months.

TurboSteam and Wrinkle Care

On models with TurboSteam, a 10-minute steam refresh can de-wrinkle lightly worn clothes without a full wash cycle — reducing the total number of drying cycles you run per week.

Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice

While many Dryer issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.

LG Appliance Experts technicians are trained directly to LG's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.

Preventing the Problem from Recurring

Most Dryer issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:

  • Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
  • Don't overload. Consistently running your Dryer beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
  • Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
  • Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
  • Level the appliance. An unlevel Dryer vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.

LG Warranty and Service Coverage

LG offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components — most notably the 10-year warranty on linear compressors in qualifying refrigerators. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact LG directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.

For appliances outside the warranty period, LG Appliance Experts provides a 90-day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine LG OEM components sourced directly from LG's authorized parts network.
