Why Is My LG Dryer Not Heating? Causes and Fixes

LG- Dryer

An LG dryer that runs but produces no heat is one of the most common appliance complaints. This guide covers the most likely culprits for both electric and gas dryers.

Electric vs. Gas — Different Causes

LG makes both electric and gas dryers, and the no-heat diagnosis differs between them. Electric dryers require two 120V legs (240V total), while gas dryers rely on a gas valve and igniter. Identifying your model type is the first step.

Electric Dryer: No Heat Causes

  • Tripped circuit breaker — electric dryers use a double-pole breaker. If one leg trips, the motor runs but there is no heat. Reset the breaker fully (off then on).
  • Blown thermal fuse — a safety fuse that opens permanently if the dryer overheats. Located on the exhaust duct inside the dryer. Not resettable — must be replaced.
  • Failed heating element — the coiled resistance wire that generates heat. Check for visible breaks or test with a multimeter for continuity.
  • Hi-limit thermostat failure — opens the heating circuit if the duct is blocked. Often fails at the same time as the thermal fuse.

Gas Dryer: No Heat Causes

  • Gas supply issue — verify the shutoff valve behind the dryer is fully open (handle parallel to the pipe = open).
  • Igniter failure — the igniter glows orange to light the gas. You can observe this by looking through the burner inspection window during startup.
  • Gas valve coils — the solenoid coils that open the gas valve are a common failure point. If the igniter glows but gas never ignites, the coils are likely failed.
  • Flame sensor (radiant sensor) — tells the control board when the flame is lit. A failed sensor leaves gas valve closed.

Both Types: Check the Duct First

Before replacing any components, clean the exhaust duct thoroughly. A blocked duct causes the thermal fuse to blow (electric) or the hi-limit thermostat to trip. If you replace the fuse without fixing the blockage, the fuse will blow again within days.

tE Error Codes

LG dryers display tE1 or tE2 when the thermistor (temperature sensor) reads out of range. This is different from a no-heat condition — the machine may still produce heat but cannot regulate it correctly. Thermistors are inexpensive and easy to replace.

When to Call a Technician

Gas valve replacement and electrical component diagnosis inside a running dryer require proper training and safety precautions. If you are not comfortable working with gas lines or 240V wiring, schedule a service call. A professional can diagnose and repair a no-heat dryer in a single visit in most cases.

Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice

While many Dryer issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.

LG Appliance Experts technicians are trained directly to LG's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.

Preventing the Problem from Recurring

Most Dryer issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:

  • Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
  • Don't overload. Consistently running your Dryer beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
  • Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
  • Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
  • Level the appliance. An unlevel Dryer vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.

LG Warranty and Service Coverage

LG offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components — most notably the 10-year warranty on linear compressors in qualifying refrigerators. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact LG directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.

For appliances outside the warranty period, LG Appliance Experts provides a 90-day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine LG OEM components sourced directly from LG's authorized parts network.
