LG Dishwasher Leaving Dishes Dirty or Cloudy: Complete Fix Guide

3 min read Updated: April 7, 2026 By LG Appliance Experts

Poor cleaning results in an LG dishwasher are almost always fixable without parts. Learn how water temperature, detergent, loading, and filter maintenance affect cleaning performance.

The Most Overlooked Fix: Water Temperature

LG dishwashers are designed to operate with inlet water at 120°F. If your water heater is set lower, or if the dishwasher is located far from the water heater, cold water enters the cycle and detergent does not activate properly. Run the hot water at the kitchen sink until it is steaming before starting the dishwasher — this purges the cold water from the supply line.

Check and Clean the Filter

A partially blocked filter restricts water pressure to the spray arms. Even a filter that is “a little dirty” can reduce cleaning performance significantly. Clean it monthly.

Inspect and Clear the Spray Arms

The spray arms have small holes that jet water onto dishes. These holes clog with mineral deposits and food debris over time.

  1. Remove both spray arms (twist off the lower arm, lift out the upper arm).
  2. Use a toothpick or thin wire to clear each hole.
  3. Rinse under water and verify water flows through all holes freely.
  4. Reinstall and confirm they spin freely without obstruction.

Detergent and Rinse Aid

  • Use a quality dishwasher detergent pod or powder — liquid gel detergent tends to leave residue on modern dishwashers
  • Always use rinse aid — it is essential for spot-free drying and prevents cloudy glass
  • Keep the rinse aid dispenser filled — LG dishwashers display a low rinse aid indicator
  • For hard water areas, consider a dishwasher cleaner tablet monthly

Loading Correctly

  • Heavily soiled surfaces should face the spray arms — don’t hide them against the rack
  • Glasses and cups go upside down on the top rack
  • Do not nest bowls or spoons — nested items block water contact
  • Ensure nothing is blocking the spray arm rotation

White Film or Cloudiness on Glassware

White film is almost always hard water mineral deposits. LG’s high-temperature wash cycle helps, but in very hard water areas, a water softener or dishwasher descaler may be necessary. Check if the film wipes off with white vinegar — if yes, it is mineral; if not, it may be etching from soft water and high heat.

Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice

While many Dishwasher issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.

LG Appliance Experts technicians are trained directly to LG's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.

Preventing the Problem from Recurring

Most Dishwasher issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:

  • Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
  • Don't overload. Consistently running your Dishwasher beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
  • Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
  • Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
  • Level the appliance. An unlevel Dishwasher vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.

LG Warranty and Service Coverage

LG offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components — most notably the 10-year warranty on linear compressors in qualifying refrigerators. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact LG directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.

For appliances outside the warranty period, LG Appliance Experts provides a 90-day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine LG OEM components sourced directly from LG's authorized parts network.
