The gas valve in the recalled dryers can fail to shut off properly, continuing to heat the dryer and its contents after the drying cycle is complete.
A faulty gas valve in these LG and Kenmore Elite gas dryers would fail to close at the end of the drying cycle, continuing to produce heat and potentially igniting clothing or drum contents. LG received 141 complaints — including more than 50 incidents of scorched or burnt clothing and 3 minor burn injuries to hands or arms — before recalling approximately 21,000 units.
All affected owners were advised to stop using the dryer immediately and contact LG or Sears to arrange a free gas valve replacement at no cost.
LG owners: call (866) 223-5355. Sears owners: call (888) 375-9741.
